Thank you to my BOOSTies for amazing BOOST Week 2!

This week was Week 2 (of 12!) of my online Strength - Flexibility - Dance BOOST Program. We focused on 'Places of Power'.

We activated our ABS and BOOTies on Monday. We walked very very very slowly, with socks on Tuesday.

And today (Friday) we combined all of this with Dancing in Places of Power.

It was AMAZING. (PS: The walking was absolutely not like THIS :))

Last but not least: 3 Tips for IMPROVISATION

Did the title scare you a little? Then these tips may be of help for you :)

Inspired by a question by Caro (an amazing BOOSTie!) & Zoom chat with Ingunn (here's her page!)

1 - Give yourself LIMITS - Paradoxically, it is MUCH easier to get creative and feel FREE to move when you set limits for yourself before practicing/performing. If you give yourself LESS options, not MORE, there's not such an unending pool of moves to choose from. It feels safer, less intimidating. Creativity blooms more freely within bounds. You can simply move within them. The limits can be something very simple. For instance: For the next 8 counts, I will stay in one spot, but I'll keep moving. Or 'I will now practice to a FULL song with ONLY figure 8's'. Or: I will move super slow here, and then fast there. Or: This part is for traveling. Creating an abstract frame for your dancing also helps to give a dance more 'texture' (this is something we played with in the #introchallenge earlier this year, and we'll do it again in the #kdancechallenge soon) Try it out, and see what happens!
2 - Change your INPUT - Sometimes, 'working' on a dance can drain us from inspiration. A great way to 'fill the well' is to give ourselves fresh input. Moving without music (something like martial arts, or even freestyle jamming in your jammies!), a walk in nature to refresh and de-stress, a nap(!) to get your subconscious working, admiring art (dance or other! anything that makes you happy to see/hear/experience it), taking a class (live or online - with a different movement art, or a different teacher), reading books (fiction is great for visualization skills!), writing/journaling (it does wonders to clear your mind) or.. simply DANCING, but to DIFFERENT music (doesn't need to be dancey either, move to whatever makes you want to move!) Anything that doesn't feel like 'work/practice' too much. All of these are great for 'dancing outside of your box' and getting your movement mojo back. Inspiration usually finds you when you're DOING something that is good for the soul. Notice what bring out your muse. Do more of that.
3 - Call it FREESTYLE - Simple, yes. But it WORKS. The word 'improvisation' feels scary enough for me to put me off. But if I call it 'freestyle', or 'free dancing' and I tell myself 'it's just for a few counts' (and I allow myself to stop whenever I want to) it's not so bad suddenly. Make it easy. Keep it small. Before you know it, you'll be dancing up a storm! (that's how this full performance happened - I had a tiny bit of time in between 2 car detailing appointments, so I decided 'just to test the light/camera setting', put on a bit of lipstick, and filmed a bit of dance. I allowed myself to stop at anytime (and I almost did, that's where you see me laying on the floor for a moment.. :)) I decided on the spot to keep on dancing.. and voilá. This was all the very first take - and I kind of liked it, even (this never ever happened to me before! so one never knows - it's never too late)

ALRIGHTY. These are my 3 top tips for 'Improvisation' (or freestyle, if you will) and dance-inspiration.
